Thank you Mrs. Coughlin

Gaudi and his perpetual construction!

The big finale to our week was an over night trip to Barcelona.

Street performers and fights between vendors made Las Ramblas the most fun. The shopping was fun too!

Our first week back in Spain has been a fun filled time of all the usual Valencia fun.You know all the stuff that we usualy take company to go do. The beach, the market, the caves, the old part of town. This time it was realy neat because we had Mrs. Laura Coughlin with us. We realy wanted to thank her for all the great things she did for Paige this year and she was kind enough to come out here so we could host her and take her around. It was a good way to re- adapt and for us to beable to tell her we do realy appreciate her.

Fiona's Birthday

It was Fiona's Birthday and she happened to be in Spain. She lives in Ireland. We had her and a few friends over for the first Pizza Party of the summer. I made her a rasberry and white chocolate butter cake and She brought me flowers. It was a beautiful evening on my back porch. (My favorite spot in all of Spain.)

In case I haven't told you the story of my friendship with Fiona....it goes like this-

One day in church we saw a family that didnt look Spanish. This happens from time to time and we get very excited about the possibility of speaking english with someone. We nearly pounce on each person that is clearly not local! Fiona, her husband Ray and her youngest daughter Elli were on vacation or "Holiday" in Spain and went to church in our ward.

Dan invited t hem for dinner as some of our spanish friends had offered to come over and cook Pealla and we wanted all the help in the world eating it!

It was a fun night, but what was insignifigant about that night ended up being a strong spiritual connection for us shortly down the road. Dan sat between the Spaniards and the english speakers along with Brother Dixon and they began to translate our conversations. One of our Spanish friends asked Fiona and her husband about thier converstion story. She told a common story of Missionaries in her small home town. Her grandfather was a barber and they would get thier hair cut at the same time as they were teach a lesson.

Her granfather told the magical stories of mystical plates and angels. They were imaginative stories that the kids found fun to listen to. However Fiona found a conection with them, a truth she didnt understand.

Years later she visited a cousin who had already met missionaries and joined the church, and asked her a few questions 6 weeks later Fiona was baptised.

She told us how she had recently gone looking for the elders who had taught her grandfather and found that there was a mission reunion this exact week in Ireland and she was sad to miss meeting the Elder Christiansen and telling him she had the work done for her Grandfather.

We all enjoyed the fun story and much other conversation that evening. We said goodnight late in the evening as is tradition in Spain. We werent sure if we would meet again but we exchanged contact info and promised to write(luckily we did, and had dinner again as well as our family has plans of visiting them in Ireland). They had plans of returning to Spain and the kids and I were already preparing for our return to the states in hope of a summer in Spain, but no real for sure plan.

This was a tough time for our family. We felt like returning to the states was the right thing, but struggled with the wrongness for our family to be seperated. We prayed that all would go smoothly if it was right and that we would have the wisdom to know. We prayed Heavenly Father would lead us to the right place for us; and all went so smoothly we didnt feel a bump. We felt like it must be right, but as humans would like some sure sign...less than the strongest of faiths.

A few weeks after we arrived in AZ and went to our ward it split, and the very next week the high counselman was sent to speak to us on the new Temple being build near our home. The prayer in my heart constantly at that time was of guidance from the Lord to do what is best for my family in this challenging situation. I Prayed for assurity that we were doing His will.

As the Counselman stood he announced his topic, but said he felt impressed to share a story.

He began to tell us of how he was a young missionary in Ireland and how he taught a barber and how his grandaughter had recently contacted him but she would be in Spain while he was in Ireland.

I'm not sure if he ever talked about temples, or what anyone else had talked about that day.

What I knew was Heavenly Father used my new friend to speak to me. He Sent his servent High counselman (former Elder) Christiensen to tell me Fionas story just weeks after she had told me on my back porch in a country miles and miles away.

What I knew as my heart raced was that the Lord knew my frailties and my need to hear from him in a real way that the path I was on was the right one. That if I had not obeyed the promtings I recieved, and had been any where else in the world I would not have heard the message from Elder Christensen.

I know the Lord lives and is aware of us, each of us in our own trials and triumphs and wants the best for us despite our wrong turns and moments of weekness. He will provide the answers and fill our hearts if we have the desire and will to follow his lead.

I bear this as my Testimony and I thank the Lord for giving me Fiona and the oportunity to grow closer to Him.

Space A

What I expected out of my first Space A flight:

I expected to wait a day or longer in a uncomfortable terminal, I expected it to be a long, bumpy uncomfortable flight with out the normal niceties still left on some airline flights. I expected freezing temperatures and moaning kids.

What I should have expected:

Tori to forget her close toe shoes (cause she did) There to be a bit of stress returning the rental car (cause there was) I didnt expect meals to be offerd, but there were. I should have known they would have a USO that keept the kids (even the teens) happy.

My sweet friend kasey to sew all six of us our own travel pillow, wich came in extreamly handy for other than sleeping (keep reading)

What I got:

First ones on the roll call! Not even a 24 hr wait. (If we were to have to wait there was another flight in a few hours as well) 1 hour 45 minutes to walk to the PX (Cause the car was already returned) to get Tori closed toe shoes. We got back just minutes before we were sent through security and loaded to another waiting room. 15 minutes later they had us pick up our meal boxes, and load onto a bus to be taken to the plane. We sat at the plane for 20 minutes before we were taken back to the waiting room while they fixed something on the plane. We ate our box lunches while we waited for the plane to be done. 1.5 hours later we had eaten a turkey on white bread sandwich with 2 slices of american cheese, a bag of BBQ potato chips and discarded a diet Coke. Some of us ate our m& m's and some saved theres. Then we loaded back on to the bus, went to the plane and after about 15 minutes were loaded on to the plane.

Now, I will do my best to describe the experience from here on out it the most clear words I can think of to give you the best possible idea of what we went through.

We sat on the seats where the cusions were so flat you could feel the wood on your bottom. When you shiffted in your seat the cusion moved with you. The interior of the plane looked like an 80 year old motor home. The sounds on the plane made me ask where was the lady with the big basket of chickens to squak and make the scene complete. The smell was that of a porta john on the last day of the state fair. We literaly shielded our noeses with the pillows Kasey made us. The air conditioning flowed from the edges of the plane like dry ice foams from a coldrun. We were chuckling and laughing at the kids expresions of disbelief that we were going to go any where in this bucket of bolts. We were litteraly crying and how funny this situation was. You may think this is a dramitasation but I am being 100% honest!

We started down the run way (did I mention there were no windows and our seats were all backwards to the way we were flying) and as soon as we reved up for take off we reved back down again. "Uhm.. we are going back to the terminal, one of the locks on our doors came open and we are going to have to go fix it"

YES please!

So we drove back. 2 hours later (with little to no Air conditoning - people opening & shuttingthe stink room door right behind us over and over again) they announced the doors were fixed and they were going to now repair a flat tire that must have been punctured on the attempted take off.

Seth looked up at us from his DS and said "you mean we havent been flying all this time"

We made it off the ground this time- We flew backwards, it a stink pile, with slightly frothy, less than useful airconditioning (I like warmth, Im nearly never hot- It was hotter than Hades)for nearly 9 hours.

I'm glad to say we arrived in Rota Spain at 1:30 in the afternoon local time and not as much as a broken fingernail.

The flight that was taking off after us ...got there before us.

Possitives:

We saved nearly $10K as the price of our tickets was mearly some sweat and a bit of a pain in the neck, but everyone paid for thier own ticket!

Washington DC

We had an amazing day in DC. Paige said her favorite was seeing the "Hope" diamond.

Seth liked The National Natural History Museum -Smithsonian (because it reminded him of the movie "Night at the Museum")

I think my favorite was the WWII memorial.

It was a hot day and we did a lot of walking, but it was great to see so many important land marks and interesting things.

Duckpin bowling

Originating in Baltimore in the

1930's duckpin bowling uses smaller pins and a ball just larger than a softball. The ball has no holes for your fingers, and because it is a bit more difficult to get a strike the players get 3 chances to roll.

We went duckpin bowling because we were in Baltimore of course.
