RI

Before my family had moved back to Conn. when I was in High School, My Grandparents had bought a small beach home in a community of small beach homes, only populated in the summer.

Its at ROy Carpenter Beach in Matunik RI.

We would go there and it could just be our own family for a week, or without any pre- warning 5-6 families could drop in and all be interested in staying in the 2 bedroom 1 bath house.

Us kids would often play all day on the beach (As a teen ager it was more like sleep) and eat at the cottage, change and shower and hang out all night, make new friends or play cards with our cousins. We often walked to the Vanilla Bean to get homemade ice cream. On certain nights the fire house would show movies, or everyonce in a while there would be block parties and dances. most the time because of all the people related to me that would be there. We would end up sleeping in cars and on the deck.

I had white birch beer there for the first time...its great if you ever get a chance to try it. We ate endless atomic fire balls and if I could scrape up enough money Id get a dough boy. (a fry bread with sugar on top) to this day....smelling fried food mixed with ocean air reminds me of those days. There was a nudest beach a small walk away wich was always interesting to go see burnt parts that shouldnt see the light of day. If you were interested in a longer walk you could go to "DADS" a man down the street made bread , delisiouse homemade bread of all flavors and he had a shack out front and a can inside (No one manned the sales) you would pick up what you wanted and drop your money in the can. MMM! great stuff!

Well, to prove the old saying "You can never go home"

The snack window wasnt open for the summer yet- so no dough boys, there was no birch beer at the shop, Grandpas cottage was being remodled and 2 of my other relatives have bought near by cottages so that will lessen the "Pile In" effect. The nudest beach has been turned into a bird sanctuary, and dads is now run by his son who closes early.

Well...the beach was still there and it was great to sleep on and the waves were great for playing in as always!

  1. Oh man, no burnt naughty bits to see? What a bummer (lol). Sounds like some great memories and now your kids are making their own memories :) Good stuff.
