Well we started on the 2nd of July with a big celebration at the base. The unit sent a few people down to Rota (naval base- 8 hrs away) to get us food from the USA (including root beer!) They invited all the other nation at the base in particular the Spanish and we had a good old fashioned bar- b-q with hot dogs and hamburgers (USDA certified- you have no idea what a differeance it makes!)
American cake and sugar cookies,watermelon and no fanta (dont get me wrong I will miss it but since I got here I feel like my blood pumps fanta!)It was fun to welcome the Spanish and share with them our holiday. They all greeted us with the typical kisses and told us congratulations on our independance. Ive never been congratulated on that before. It was fun!
Then on July 3rd we had a young womans activity at our house where we all (most of us are from different countries) shared about our countries. Dance, dress, food, etc. It was fun to learn about so many other countries. I was very interested in my friends from Equidor. How they are so close to the equater that there are areas where you have a hard time keeping your balance because of the lack of gravity! Very interesting! Of course there being 4 YW and 2 YW leaders that were American , the day before our independance day we had our Red white and blue all out and showing.
We let them taste Root beer (They thought it tasted like medicine) and mac N cheese (the spanish kids liked it the latin Americans thought it was bland) I made corn bread and honey butter. I figured that was "real native American" they seemed to enjoy it!
Then on the fourth of July we went to meet up (after church) with a group of Americans we just learned about that have an American club here in Valencia. They were having a picnic in the park. It was very interesting meeting Americans that werent here for the military and to talk to them and see what brought them here and why they have stayed! It was a beautiful eaving (it had rained earlier) and it was just the right tempurature and we enjoyed a bocodilla(Sub sandwich) and some new company!
As if that wasnt enough of a celebration Dan had Monday off so we planned on having the Elders and a few of thier companions over for Soccer and lighting up the pizza oven. We invited the Dixons to come swimming after the missionaries left and for more pizza.
It turned out the missionaries never showed up (Shoot- I like to send my missionary brother good food carma by feeding missionaries here!) The Dixions came over and we had a complete blast! The kids had water balloon fights and we ate a lot of food (I was expecting hungry missionaries) We even had some root beer left over from the July 2nd party!
All in all it was a good forth of July for 4 days! Although you will notice no fire works were seen. However fireworks are pretty regular around here so we havent had a shortage!
