In contrast to our visit to the Famine ship (read below) we had a very nice lunch! Soda Bread from the bakery, and Leek soup at Spiders!
The soup was actualy served with the traditional brown soda bread, so we saved the rasin (or current) bread for breakfast!
The Dunbrody
We got to see what life would have been like on one of these boats. Each of these bunks would have fit a whole family. No mater how large that family was. The journey would take up to 50 days. I hate to say it, but my family wouldnt last! we can't even do a hotel room for 1 month!
This basket of bread represents what could be made of the rations given the families for 1 week for 6 people. My kids looked at it and said "Ehh , not too bad!" I pointed out that it was the same, every day for 50 days. Then they thought it stunk!
In New Ross we visited the Dunbrody, it was an Irish Famine or Coffin ship. Originaly built for cargo it ended up being used to haul people from starving situations in Ireland to lands of hope such as england, Canada, and America. It got its nick name of coffin ship because of how many died aboard during thier journey.
During the potato famine Ireland lost over 2 million people either to death or imigration to other countries.
